About the Artist – Maria Morris Miller
Maria Morris Miller was born in Guysborough, Nova Scotia in 1810. In 1828 she enrolled at Dalhousie University to study art, where it was noted that she had a particular talent for botanical illustrations. Her first prints were of Nova Scotia flowers that she began working on in 1834. In 1840, 30 of her illustrations were gifted to Queen Victoria, who was so impressed that she granted her royal patronage.
Maris Morris would go on to publish four albums of botanical art. The illustrations covered the native flowers of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Eastern Canada. Her fourth album was published in 1867, which was not only the year Canada was established as a country, but was also the year Maria’s work was featured at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Maria Morris Miller would pass away in 1875, at age 65.
